Brazil has 12 thermoelectric plants with total installed capacity of 2.56GW scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2025, according to data from watchdog Aneel reviewed by BNamericas.

The startup of the plants will follow that of Eneva's 92.3MW Parnaíba VI in Maranhão state, which came online March 5.

Most of the projects are biomass-fired but the highlight is the 1.67GW LNG-to-power GNA II in Rio de Janeiro, owned by Gás Natural Açu (GNA).

Here is the list of the undertakings:

Note: The total capacity in the table of 2.66GW is higher than the 2.56GW mentioned above because some of the plants will not have all their generating units starting up in 2025.

Tender

A large batch of additional greenfield thermal plants are expected to be hired at Brazil's next backup capacity tender scheduled for June 27.

According to federal energy research company EPE, 228 gas-fired undertakings with 61,635MW of potency and 87 biofuel-fired plants with 6,962MW have registered to participate.

Of the total, 67% are new projects, 30% existing thermal projects and 3% hydroelectric expansions.
