Brazilian mining companies call for end to outdated underground mining restrictions

Mining companies in Brazil are calling for an update to labor laws governing underground mining operations.

According to mining association Ibram, revising the current legislation could help create more qualified jobs and increase income in the regions where underground mines are located.

Currently, the law severely limits the workforce eligible to perform underground duties, allowing only men between the ages of 21 and 50 to work in such conditions.

"The rules are so outdated that women are still prohibited from working underground, as if they were less capable than men. Younger men and those over 50 years of age are also banned from performing underground duties," Ibram said in a statement.

"With this age restriction for men and lack of equity for women in underground operations, the loss of productivity and competitiveness is immense for companies. There are significant time periods spent just on commuting to and from underground work sites,” said Ibram.

Representatives of the mining association took part in a debate organized by the lower house of congress to address the issue. At present, underground mines in Brazil typically reach depths of only around 1,300m due to these labor restrictions. Changes to the legislation could enable the country to tap into its mineral production potential at depths of up to 4,000m.

Ibram also emphasized that updating the legislation is critical for Brazil to fully develop its potential in the production of critical minerals.
