Paraguay eyes 2024 tender for hospital project

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña has instructed his cabinet to push forward with a project to replace a hospital in Itauguá, Central department, with a new complex as soon as possible. 

The project will have an estimated cost of US$150-100mn and the government expects a tender to be held this year, according to health minister María Teresa Barán. 

The works would last between two and two and a half years, Barán said during an interview with Radio 970AM.

“The president has called upon the entire cabinet so that we start working to speed up all processes to build the new hospital,” she said, adding that improvements to the city’s existing hospital are also being studied. 

Barán said the financing part is still being discussed between her office, the finance ministry and the public works ministry (MOPC). 

In hospital projects, MOPC covers construction costs, while the health ministry puts up the funds for equipment and staff.

When asked by BNamericas, a MOPC spokesperson said the technical specifications have not been determined yet due to the early stage of the project.
