Canada's TC Energy said Friday it had started collecting payments from Mexico's state electric power CFE for natural gas supplied by its US$3.9bn Southeast Gateway pipeline.

The mainly underwater 715km pipeline supplies gas sourced from the US to Mexico's energy-starved southeast, including power plants CFE operates and is building in the region. Construction of the pipeline was completed earlier this year.

TC Energy said it had received payment from CFE for May, in accordance with the contract between the two companies.

Calgary-based TC Energy says the pipeline will support the operations of 10 of CFE's planned natural gas power plants.

The company is still waiting for Mexico's new energy regulator CNE to approve regulated rates for other potential users of the pipeline.

The pipeline has the capacity to transport 1.3Bf3/d.
